Good Communication Is Oxygen for Leaders

Good communication skills are like oxygen for leaders—without them, the team cannot thrive. Communication isn’t just about transmitting information; it’s about how the message is delivered, understood, and acted upon. Saying the thing right is just as important as saying the thing.


In my experience, communication and emotional intelligence are inseparable. It is nearly impossible to be an effective leader with strong communication skills if emotional intelligence is absent. I’ve witnessed leaders who, often unintentionally, communicated in ways that crushed their direct reports’ confidence. The result? Talented employees became hesitant, unable to make even basic decisions. Their morale suffered, productivity declined, and the ripple effect damaged the overall performance of the organization.


This type of destructive communication is counterproductive. Worse still, leaders who lack emotional intelligence are often blind to the fact that they themselves are the root cause of the problem.


So, how do we avoid falling into this trap?



Five Ways to Strengthen Leadership Communication


1. Self-Reflection Take time each day to reflect on your communication, actions, behaviors, and decisions. Ask yourself: Did I build trust today, or did I erode it? Continuous reflection leads to continuous improvement.

2. DISC Analysis A DISC assessment helps you understand your natural communication style, recognize the styles of others, and adapt accordingly. Great leaders flex their style to ensure the message is understood—not just spoken.

3. 360-Degree Feedback Feedback is a gift. By participating in a 360-degree feedback process, you gain visibility into how others perceive you. This helps bridge the gap between intention and impact.

4. Situational Leadership One size doesn’t fit all. Situational Leadership teaches us to adjust our leadership style based on the readiness and capability of the person or team we’re leading. Done well, it maximizes both confidence and competence.

5. Active Listening Perhaps the most underrated skill in leadership. Active listening builds trust, ensures understanding, and empowers others to contribute fully. It transforms conversations from transactions into relationships.

When leaders practice self-reflection, embrace feedback, adapt their communication styles, and truly listen, they create an environment where people feel valued and empowered. Communication becomes a tool for alignment and growth rather than fear and hesitation.
